Joe's Nerdy Weekend Reads #7
It's the weekend, so time to unwind. Pour a cup of coffee (or many) and enjoy some interesting reading.
This weekend, I’m chilling in Marbella, Spain. It’s absolutely lovely here!
Keeping this newsletter pretty short this weekend. Heads down on some writing and course projects right now, with some cool stuff hopefully dropping next week. Stay tuned…
Hope you have a fun weekend!
Thanks,
Joe

Cool Weekend Reads
Your AI Survival Guide • Sol Rashidi & Joe Reis (GOTO 2024)
Sol Rashidi’s new book, Your AI Survival Guide, is out! Sol is one of the people I most admire in the data space. She’s a pioneer in leading change with data and AI at the executive level, and this book reflects her real-world, battle-tested experience.
I helped review this book, so you know it’s awesome AF 😉.
Check out our chat about her new book.
They thought they were joining an accelerator — instead they lost their startups (Techcrunch)
“I feel so much stress and embarrassment,” she told TechCrunch. “I’m a struggling founder and don’t have the money to pay for a lawyer. Here was this accelerator supposed to help founders, and instead it is imposing stress on young founders.”
Such shady dealings at Newchip. Definitely worth a read if you’re considering joining an incubator.
Welcome to the white-collar recession (Insider)
Anecdotally, I’ve been hearing from very senior people (C-level, VP, director) that finding work, especially in tech, is next to impossible. If you’re looking for work right now, godspeed.
What can LLMs never do? (Strange Loop Canon)
This article looks at something I wasn’t aware of. While LLMs are super impressive for many tasks, they fail at things like Sodoku and Celluar Automata.
The rise and fall of Logan Paul's Prime energy drink, which once resold for
$1,500 a can (Fortune)
Like a lot of kids growing up watching YouTube, my youngest son was OBSESSED with Prime last year. He collected Prime bottles, and during our trip to London last year, insisted on stopping at every store to look for rare Prime drinks. Fast forward to today, and sales of Prime have plummeted. This is a good read if you’re interested in the power of influencers, and why hype alone is hard for products to sustain.
