Welcome to my new weekend newsletter! Every Saturday, you get a short rant from me, cool articles I’ve read through the week, upcoming events, and more.
Welcome to the weekend!
Here we are. A lot of people have been asking if I’m doing a newsletter. I finally got my weekend newsletter up and running, so thanks for joining the fun. Every Saturday, I’ll write up something that appears somewhat coherent and intelligent for you because I’ve got a lot on my mind.
Why a weekend newsletter? I’m a huge fan of reading on the weekends, especially articles. My normal reading habit is to queue up 30 to 50 articles, then read through them over the weekend. Also, most people are swamped during the week, and newsletters tend to get put off until the weekend if people remember to read them at all.
The following newsletters will have a tech or data-oriented rant from me. But this morning, I’m about to go to the skatepark with my son, so duty calls. Whatever you do this weekend, I hope it’s amazing!
Cool Reads
How Scale Kills Data Teams (Chad Sanderson)
Exactly what the title says. Definitely worth a read.
“What made sense for the start-up no longer works at scale. When applications require trust, like AI/ML pipelines, data products, or financial reporting, the flexibility of the Modern Data Stack and its democratization suddenly becomes a massive liability.”
Risks Posed by AI Technology Spur Calls for New Regulatory Agency (WSJ)
AI-powered apps are getting more powerful by the day. While most people don’t expect AGI in the near future, some experts are worried about the potential risks of AI, like bias, discrimination, and job displacement. They're calling for creating a new regulatory agency to oversee AI development and use. Others think regulation will do more harm than good. Either way, AI’s now at the point where it will get a lot of scrutiny.
You may have heard of DORA metrics. SPACE is a new way of looking at developer productivity. Definitely worth a look.
Cheesier, Saucier, and Drowning in Caviar. How TikTok took over the menu (Grub Street)
TikTok is shaping (literally) how chefs are designing their foods. Because we all take foodie pics, right?
Why you should still read the docs (Death & Gravity)
I’m a docs guy myself. When in doubt, RTFM.
Real Multithreading is Coming to Python - Learn How You Can Use It Now (Martin Heinz)
Pre-Interpreter Global Interpreter Lock (that’s a mouthful) will soon be a thing.
Monoliths Are Not Dinosaurs (All Things Distributed)
There is no silver bullet with architecture. Werner Vogels argues that monoliths should not be dismissed out of hand and that they can be a good choice for many applications.
Fundraising By VC Firms Themselves Is At a 10-Year Low. What That Means. (Saastr)
Raising money isn’t just hard for startups. VCs are having a harder time raising money from their limited partners (LPs) than in a decade.
AI machines aren’t ‘hallucinating’. But their makers are (The Guardian)
Naomi Klein argues that AI is being developed by a small group of wealthy individuals and corporations motivated by profit rather than a desire to solve problems or improve society. Anyone who thinks this is an altruistic endeavor hasn’t paid attention. In other news, water is wet.
