Great post. Mastering the fundamentals is always rewarding. I have fall into the tool first trap and everytime I had to go back to the fundamentals to understand concepts!
I think my question would be more - 'how do I convince my employer that there is a need for a full-time position to work on what I am currently shoehorning into my current duties?' Supply Chain Ops people deal with problems all day long, but I wonder if companies realize there is a strong need for data-literate people on the front line. It seems they put all their resources at the network level.

Focusing on business was something Margy Ross used to emphasize. My best data project was giving our buyers to detailed data instead of summaries.
