It is hard to teach experience, it takes time and inquisitive instincts to do a job well done and understanding the "why". And being accountable for learning and fixing poor designs. First principals of data model patterns, when specific data types should be used, standards, database performance principals are techniques that you mentioned are company independent.

Back in the day the DBA data shamed anyone that wasted storage or CPU cycles! ;)

Just like leaving the earth a little better than you found it, IT people should leave their development environments a little better than what they inherited.
